QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with completion of a technical or trade school program in HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair. A minimum of three years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems is required, preferably in a school or institutional setting. The candidate must hold a valid HVAC Technician license or certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as EPA Section 608 Certification for handling refrigerants. The position requires thorough knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and preventive maintenance practices. The candidate must be able to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and service manuals. Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and time-management skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.

 

DESCRIPTION

The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout the school division. This position ensures that all HVAC systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The HVAC Technician plays a vital role in maintaining a comfortable, healthy, and energy-efficient environment for students and staff.

SUPERVISION

The HVAC Technician works under the supervision of the Manager for Maintenance and the Director of Operations.

 

WORK CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in various school buildings and mechanical environments, both indoors and outdoors, and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, noise, and potentially hazardous materials. The position requires frequent standing, bending, climbing, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds. The HVAC Technician must be available for after-hours emergencies, on-call duties, and occasional weekend work. Adherence to safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment is mandatory.
