QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's or Master's degree in English, Education, or a related field.  Must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia Teaching License with specific endorsement(s) in the area to which assigned.  Prior experience teaching English to high school students is preferred. Strong knowledge of English language arts curriculum and instructional strategies.  Effective communication and interpersonal skills.  Passion for fostering an appreciation and understanding of literature and language in young learners.  Strong classroom management and communication skills.  Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.  Familiarity with educational technology tools for English Language Arts instruction.

 

DESCRIPTION

The High School English Language Arts Teacher is a dedicated and dynamic educator responsible for inspiring an appreciation for literature, language, and effective communication in high school students. This role involves creating engaging lessons, fostering critical thinking skills, and cultivating a positive and inclusive learning environment.

 

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the supervision of the School Principal.

 

WORK CONDITIONS

Duties performed are typically in the school setting.  Performs professional work providing support and consultative services for assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting.  Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Some assignments may involve exposure to risks associated with interactions with parents and students in heightened emotional states. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.

If you hold a bachelor’s degree and are willing to commit and take steps toward earning your teaching license, you may be eligible for an Associate Teacher position. Associate Teachers serve in full teaching roles while receiving support and guidance as they work toward licensure. The Associate Teacher salary for 2025–26 is approximately $48,265 (pending budget approval).
