QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education or a related field, and must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia teaching license. Experience in teaching multiple subject areas and providing behavioral support to students is required. The candidate should possess strong classroom management skills and have a demonstrated ability to work with students who exhibit challenging behaviors. This role involves implementing and developing behavioral interventions and individualized behavior support plans for students.  Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential. Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and techniques for alternative education settings is preferred.  Formal training in specific physical restraint techniques, or willingness to be trained, is required. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.  

 

DESCRIPTION

The Elementary Teacher for the TEAM Program provides unique and specialized services for students in grades kindergarten & 1st who require social/emotional and behavioral support along with a focus beyond that of the typical academic classroom. The program is staffed with an elementary teacher who provides instruction in the four core academic areas, with guidance from content area teachers, in a classroom with low pupil-to-teacher ratio (one teacher for every 8-10 students). Behavior staff provide targeted support according to a predetermined schedule.  In summary, the teacher will be expected to provide the following services/support to students: educational (core subject and elective instruction); counseling (individual, group); social skills training; goal setting; executive skills training; and conflict resolution and mediation.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the supervision of the School Principal in conjunction with the Central Office personnel who support alternative programs.

 

WORK CONDITIONS

The TEAM Program Teacher works in a classroom setting. The role requires regular interaction with students, parents, and school staff. The position may involve handling challenging behaviors and implementing behavior management strategies. The teacher must be able to adapt to a flexible schedule and work in a fast-paced environment. This role may also require participation in after-school meetings, events, or professional development sessions. The teacher must maintain a professional demeanor and adhere to school policies and procedures at all times.  This work often entails frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Certain assignments may have deadlines as they involve customizing and delivering programs to cater to diverse groups' needs. Additionally, employees may be called upon to provide emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as required.
