QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must hold a Master's degree in Education, Literacy, or related field. Licensed as a Reading Specialist, and worked in a similar role (i.e. Reading Specialist or Coach) for a minimum of 5 years. Valid teaching certification and significant experience in literacy instruction. Demonstrated coaching experience in educational settings. In-depth knowledge of literacy research, best practices, and instructional strategies. Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data analysis to inform instructional decision-making. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with stakeholders. Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in literacy education. Ability to provide effective professional development and coaching to educators. Familiarity with educational technology tools and digital resources for literacy instruction.

 

DESCRIPTION

The Division Literacy Supervisor is responsible for advancing literacy instruction and fostering a culture of literacy excellence within the school division. This position involves providing leadership, guidance, and support to educators in implementing effective literacy strategies that enhance student achievement across grade levels.

 

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

• Support principals and teachers/staff as they strive to implement evidence-based reading instruction and deeper learning.
• Guide the division in the direction to blend the English/Reading Standards of Learning with the commitment to taking the learning to a deeper, real-life level.
• Connect regularly with principals to learn of their school’s progress and what support is needed for literacy - e.g. resources, training, etc.
• Provide principals and their teachers with information regarding best practices and research that can help enhance their work with literacy and provide support with these.
• Observe and gather information about the progress of literacy work in classrooms.
• Bring key individuals in schools (e.g. administrators and teachers) together to gain feedback, identify obstacles and find ways to lessen or remove them, and provide clarity as needed.
• Create and/or compile resources to support the literacy work of teachers, principals, and schools.
• Oversee the selection and implementation of high quality instructional materials for core and supplemental curriculum.
• Provide and/or support training for teachers/staff/administrators on identified literacy topics.
• Along with the Directors of Elementary and Secondary Instruction, lead work on the division’s literacy goals through the development and implementation of the Literacy Plan.
• Collect and monitor ongoing screening and student achievement data for reading and writing in order to ascertain the effectiveness of the Literacy Plan. Gather feedback from administrators, teachers, students, and parents on adjustments that may need to be made. Spearhead the work of revising the plan as needed.
• Actively coordinate literacy supports with the Elementary and Secondary Directors of Instruction and representatives from the Department of Student Services.
• Collaborate with other members of the Instructional Team and view the work and communication through the lens of our stakeholders (principals, teachers, and others) so that there is clear, efficient communication throughout the division.
• Serve as the liaison with the VDOE and other key organizations on requirements and opportunities for literacy; filter and focus these with principals and teachers to support their work and stay aligned to the division’s vision and direction.
• Provide support for whatever may be needed as the principals balance various responsibilities and opportunities. Address additional needs identified by the superintendent or other senior leadership.
• Actively shape a positive culture throughout our schools and the division.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Elementary Education and the Director of Secondary Education.

 

WORK CONDITIONS

Duties are performed in a variety of settings, including the School Board Office and the schools.  Work is performed regularly in professional settings and in the field.  Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.  Work requires assignments involving a great deal of interactions with people as well as meeting frequent deadlines.
