The Board aims to complete the search process by November 2026. The new superintendent is expected to officially assume the role by March 1, 2027.

Hopewell City Schools is an equal opportunity employer.

Seeking a Strategic District Leader Who Can Lead Effectively in K–12 Education

The Hopewell City School Board invites applications from highly accomplished, student-centered educational leaders for the position of Superintendent of Schools.

Hopewell City Public Schools seeks an exceptional leader prepared to provide strategic direction, strengthen academic achievement, develop and support outstanding educators, responsibly steward public resources, and build meaningful relationships among students, families, employees, the School Board, and the greater Hopewell community.

The next Superintendent will be expected to understand that effective district leadership extends beyond managing schools. The successful candidate must be prepared to lead an entire educational organization—aligning governance, instruction, finance, human resources, operations, safety, facilities, communications, and community engagement around one fundamental priority: student success.

The Leadership Opportunity

The Hopewell City School Board seeks a Superintendent who can respect the division's strengths and traditions while creating a clear, measurable strategy for its future.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the capacity to:

  • Establish and communicate a compelling vision for K–12 teaching, learning, and student achievement.
  • Build a strong working relationship with the School Board while respecting the distinction between Board governance and Superintendent administration.
  • Use student achievement, financial, operational, attendance, and workforce data to guide decisions and measure progress.
  • Recruit, develop, support, and retain highly effective teachers, principals, administrators, and support professionals.
  • Strengthen instructional consistency and academic achievement throughout the division.
  • Promote safe, supportive, disciplined, and inclusive learning environments.
  • Exercise sound fiscal stewardship, transparency, accountability, and long-range planning.
  • Build trust through effective communication with employees, families, students, government partners, businesses, and community stakeholders.
  • Develop partnerships that expand college, career, technical education, workforce development, and postsecondary opportunities for students.
  • Lead organizational change thoughtfully while establishing measurable expectations and accountability for results.
  • Maintain a highly visible presence in schools and throughout the Hopewell community.

Virginia's superintendent leadership environment also requires the ability to navigate governance, budgeting, personnel, community engagement, instructional improvement, and major division initiatives. VASS identifies challenges facing Virginia's division leaders, including local governance, educator recruitment and retention, family engagement, literacy, budgeting, succession planning, crisis response, and systems thinking.

Desired Professional Profile

The Board is particularly interested in a strategic district leader with demonstrated K–12 leadership experience and a record of producing positive organizational and educational outcomes.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate executive-level competencies in educational leadership, strategic planning, curriculum and instruction, organizational management, budgeting and finance, personnel management, school and community relations, and continuous improvement.

Candidates should possess the appropriate Virginia Superintendent endorsement/license or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the required Virginia credential. Virginia superintendent searches commonly specify Virginia Superintendent certification or eligibility as a condition of candidacy.

Application Materials

Applicants should be prepared to submit a complete professional application package consisting of:

  1. A formal letter of application explaining the candidate's interest in Hopewell City Public Schools and demonstrating alignment with the division's goals, needs, and expectations for its next Superintendent.
  2. A current and comprehensive résumé documenting educational preparation, professional experience, leadership accomplishments, and relevant credentials.
  3. Three to five recent letters of professional reference from individuals familiar with the applicant's educational leadership and executive-level performance.
  4. Proof of Virginia superintendent certification/licensure or documentation demonstrating eligibility to obtain the appropriate Virginia credential.
  5. Any additional materials required through the official BWP & Associates application process.
  6. Official transcripts will be required from candidates who are invited to interview with the School Board.

A Leader for Hopewell's Next Chapter

This search is about more than filling a position. The Hopewell City School Board seeks a leader who can help establish the next chapter of excellence for Hopewell City Public Schools.

The next Superintendent must listen before acting, set priorities, build organizational confidence, develop a high-performing leadership team, and translate the Board's strategic direction into measurable results for students.

The successful candidate should bring a philosophy of service, accountability, collaboration, visibility, and continuous improvement, and possess the courage to make difficult decisions when necessary to advance the interests of students and the school division.

How to Apply

Candidates should carefully review the official posting for application deadlines, required documentation, search timelines, and submission instructions before applying.
