QUALIFICATIONS

Must hold a Master’s Degree in School Counseling, or related field, or be eligible to earn a Master’s Degree.  Must hold an endorsement in School Counseling based on VDOE guidelines.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills.  Knowledge of academic, career, and personal/social development theories and counseling techniques.  Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations pertaining to student privacy and educational rights.  Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and community stakeholders.  Experience in crisis intervention and management.  Proficient in using counseling-related software and tools.  Commitment to ongoing professional development.

 

DESCRIPTION

The School Counselor provides a full range of professional pupil/student services activities in the areas of academic, personal, and guidance counseling for students at school to which assigned; organizes, and assists with the utilization of educational and personal development information; plans, schedules, and organizes sequential counseling activities and assessment activities consistent with students’ academic, developmental, and personal needs and goals.

 

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Provide individual and group counseling to elementary school students to address academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers and parents to identify academic challenges and implement strategies for student success.
  • Monitor and assess students' academic progress, intervening when necessary to address issues affecting performance.
  • Implement programs promoting personal development, character education, and resilience.
  • Assist with addressing issues impacting adolescence, such as bullying, peer pressure, and mental health to foster a positive and inclusive school environment.
  • Provide immediate support and intervention during crises or emergencies affecting students.
  • Collaborate with school staff and external agencies to ensure the well-being of students in crisis.
  • Collaborate with various teams to develop and implement services and supports for specialized populations (i.e. Students with special needs; English Learners; etc.).
  • Facilitate communication between parents, teachers, and students to enhance the overall educational experience.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records, ensuring compliance with privacy laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WORK CONDITIONS

This position applies to elementary, secondary, special or alternative education center positions. School Counselors typically perform their duties and responsibilities in and out of the classroom setting. Some work is conducted in private, such as in individual counseling sessions and consultation sessions with parents and school staff regarding specific individuals. Some assignments may also require student monitoring and supervision activities in addition to guidance and counseling assignments.  Work may require frequent standing, sitting, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.  Work requires assignments involving a great deal of interactions with people as well as meeting frequent deadlines.

$56,037 –- $85,959 (210-day contract)
