QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate’s qualifications may vary based on background and tutoring subject area. Tutors may include licensed/current teachers, retired teachers, aspiring teachers, paraprofessionals, and other interested individuals.  An understanding of elementary and/or secondary school curriculum and teaching methods, or a willingness to learn, is required.  Excellent communication skills and ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and to follow the direction of school administrators and/or lead teachers is needed. Patience, empathy, and enthusiasm for teaching and learning is necessary.

 

DESCRIPTION

A Secondary School Tutor is responsible for providing targeted academic support to secondary students (grades 6-12) in various subject areas. This role is geared to reinforce foundational skills, foster a positive attitude toward learning, and help students achieve their academic potential, while having a focus on individualized instruction, positive reinforcement, and effective communication with teachers and parents.

 

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions tailored to the specific academic needs and learning styles of students.
  • Assist students with their homework assignments, clarifying doubts, and reinforcing concepts covered in the classroom.
  • Help students develop essential study skills, time management, and organizational habits to improve their overall academic performance.
  • Track and assess students' progress, identifying areas of improvement and areas where additional support is needed.
  • Communicate progress reports to teachers and administrators.
  • Create a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement, participation, and enthusiasm for learning.
  • Utilize the provided teaching materials, resources, and educational technologies to enhance the learning experience and cater to diverse learning needs.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with teachers and administrators to coordinate efforts and ensure students receive comprehensive support.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to students, promoting positive behavior, respect, and a strong work ethic.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.

 

SUPERVISION

Tutors work under the supervision of School Administration.

 

WORK CONDITIONS

Duties performed are typically in a school setting.  Performs professional work providing support to students for assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting.  Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups.

HOURLY RATE

$30/hour or $50/hour based on credentials
